There’s something about an unplanned road trip that feels just right. Not knowing what you’re going to find or see makes it more interesting. Once in a while I crave to go for a ride but when I mean a ride, I mean “getting lost” type of ride. A ride with no destination and exploring new roads is always exciting for me. I’m not going to lie, I’ve been living in RI for so many years (ever since I was 14 years old) and can you believe that I still don’t know my State that well. Sad huh! I know the city life very well but I haven’t explored the country side of RI. Ever since I learned to appreciate nature and the wild, I look forward to seeing what this small state have to offer.
A few weeks ago my fiancé and I went for just a ride and possibly catch the sunset anywhere and we ended up in this beautiful park near the water called Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge in Charlestown, RI. I learned that this park is one of five national wildlife refuges in Rhode Island. Formerly part of Charlestown Naval Auxiliary Landing Fields, the refuge now provides visitors with over four miles of hiking trails. There’s also an observation platform at Grassy Point in Ninigret Park where over 250 species of birds have been recorded. Refuge shores support a large diversity of marine life such as blue crab, bay scallop, and winter flounder.
I did enjoy the little time that we spent in this park however, I didn’t explore this park as much as I wanted to because after taking photos of the sunset and the beautiful foam formed around the shore, it was already dark and we sort of felt lost. So we ran back to the car like two little kids running scared in the dark lol. I would love to go back and hit the hiking trails and check out the observation platform at Grassy Point as well. You’ll be surprised by how many cool places you have around your city/state that you don’t know about. Take a ride and discover! You’ll never know what you might learn.
